Sequels can be funny things. The announcement of one sequel can collectively make the fan community groan out loud and question if there is any originality left in Hollywood (personally, I think doing a good sequel takes a TON of originality), but the announcement of another sequel can whip the fan base into a complete joyous frenzy with high anticipation. Such is the case with the next Batman.
Under the direction of Christopher Nolan, the new Batman franchise has enjoyed remarkable success and quality. The most regular "complaint" you'll hear from the fan base is that they don't put them out fast enough.
Well, if you're one of those people, the following news from Christopher Nolan himself may dampen your day. Nolan says the next Batman film will be the "end of the story".
In a recent interview with the LA Times, Nolan is quoted as saying:
"The key thing that makes the third film an great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story. And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story…I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters. My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these thing don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling."
This quote doesn't automatically mean Nolan will be done with Batman once the next film comes out, but it does suggest it, and it's consistent with many signs we've seen from Nolan. We know that he likes to walk away from Batman after each film to do something different (Doing "The Prestige" after "Batman Begins" and now "Inception") and that it took some time for him to even commit to doing a third Batman film. It would make sense that he wants to wrap up his trilogy and then move on.
Is that what's happening here? We'll have to wait and see.
