Video: 'Spider-Man 4' Cancelation And Reaction From Around The Web

 In  Action/Adventure, Industry

With the surprising news racing around the web that "Spider-Man 4" has been canceled and that Sony plans on relaunching the franchise in 2012 with a new director, a new cast and a completely clean slate, many are still wondering about how the most successful film franchise in the history of the comic book genre came to such an abrupt end.

John Campea of Script-To-Screen runs down the issues that caused the cancelation of the franchise and talks to some of the leading voices in the online film community to get their reaction and thoughts on the news.

So what do you think of the "Spider-Man" news?  Do you think this was all a mistake, or an opportunity for something even better?

    Hey Youssnet,

I know what you mean. I think the reason I'm trying to stay more open minded about it is because they're not really "replacing" Raimi and Maguire. This will be a whole new franchise. I'm going to try to reserve judgment until I see who they get to direct. However, I can completely understand your pessimism.

Well considering Sony was the reason Venom was in the third outing, and Raimi didn't want Venom in the third movie, and then of course the fact that the third movie was a giant mess, MAYBE Sony should take a step back and let the guy do what he does best. It's like being a world class chef, and having your boss tell you how much salt to use. The man turned in two solid films before 3, and is still a solid, bankable director. To abandon him and Tobey, the two men who made those films the big successes that they were, that's just bad business. And talk about taking an incredible risk, attempting to reboot a successful franchise with all new people - not smart. I like Neil Miller's idea too, trying to make it a period piece in the 1960's, maybe follow the ideas and ideals on the comics when they first came out. It seems like we're really seeing a trend in this new decade (both with this and NBC) that studios and networks would rather run away from a problem than try to work it out. Even though the HULK reboot was infinitely better than the first attempt, I don't like the mentality of Hollywood to think that just because something doesn't work the first time, simply reinvent it a few years later and act like the previous attempt never existed. That's not a good was to do business. It's almost indicative of us as a society. We've become so lazy and so non-confrontational, that rather than deal with a problem head on, we pretend it never happened and run away from it. The world of entertainment needs to mature... big time.

Given the build up and rumors surrounding this movie, it's a huge disappointment to a lot of people to hear it's not happening. It will be interesting to see how it's handled in 2012!

Check out these links to the rumors I mentioned:

Hi John.... i agree with you about not judging too fast, but it is just that i have a negative feeling about these whole change, if i were one of the executive of Sony Studios i would do anything i can to have the original cast. and coming up with a brand new spiderman wouldn't be a wise move at my point of view but i am just an aspiring artist

    Hey Youssnet,

See, I differ with you on that a little bit. Tobey Maguire is almost 36 years old, and he's starting to show he's no teenager anymore. Also, I think Raimi is tapped out creatively when it comes to Spiderman. So many things were exactly the same in all three movies. Also, Raimi is a CREATIVE guy... and it's not good for someone creative to stay on the exact same thing for so long (he's already spent 10 years of his life on Spiderman). I think it's good for him and for the spiderman that he move on.

    BUT....

My feeling is that they shouldn't reboot. Just get a new director and cast, but keep the same continuity. I could feel differently tomorrow, but today that's my thought. What do you think?

John... it seems you have lot of experience in making your point, i've go to say nothing is better than change and tobey sure doesn't look like a teenager anymore

As long as they don't spend the first half of the movie telling us how he became Spidey, I'm all for it. Also, I think they should bring back Venom.

    DJWL,

I think that's important. We all know the origin story and we don't need to see it again. Hopefully they just handle that in the opening credits. We shall see.

Regardless, I'm actually pretty interested in seeing what's next.
