This weekend is proving to be extremely busy at the box office, as a slew of new releases from big named stars hit the cineplex. Variety has the lowdown on the box office numbers for Friday.
The big winners were "Disney's A Christmas Carol" and the limited release of "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."
Robert Zemeckis' motion-capture version of the Dickens classic took in $9 million dollars in its first day of release. The film was released in nearly 3700 theaters, including a large number of 3D and IMAX screens.
"Precious" -- which has won numerous awards on the festival circuit -- took in a stunning $585,000 from just 18 screens. This is the best for any film opening in under 100 locations. It toppled the record held by last year's "Milk," which took in $268,487 off of 34 theaters.
"The Fourth Kind", "The Men Who Stare at Goats", "This Is It" and "The Box" rounded out the Friday Top 5.
