'Avatar' Dominates New Year's Box Office

 In  Box Office, Industry

Happy 2010 MovieWatchers! In the first official box office Friday of the New Year, we got to see lots of old favorites in the top 10.

James Cameron's "Avatar" continues to sizzle. The film topped the $800 million worldwide mark on Thursday and is projected to reach $341 million domestically at the end of the weekend! That's just insane!

"Sherlock Holmes," "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and "It's Complicated" also continued to perform well on Friday and look strong going into the full weekend.

One of the biggest surprise successes of the year, "The Blind Side" managed to cross the $200 million domestic mark on Friday -- a huge achievement.

Here are the box office numbers, including New Year's Day, courtesy of Deadline Hollywood:

I can't believe Avatar is still doing so much business. $24M for third Friday is 2x what TDK did for its 3rd Friday. If Avatar keeps going the way it is then I will not be surprised if it beats TDK. I think its still way to early to see if it will get close to Titanic.

Avatar movie tickets are still selling out. Had a hard time finding open show times last night.

My personal prediction...Avatar will finish with at least $560M and will beat TDK by the end of March. After all, it will easily set the record for the most earned in its third weekend this weekend (Spider-man held the previous record with $40M) with around $60M. So it should be at $340M+ by the end of this weekend. After that it has 4 more weekends in January, and if it takes in an average of $40M a week it'll be at $500M by the end of Jan. It only has to make $60M in February after that, which I think will be easy.

However, do I think it'll best Titanic? No. The reason being is that the 3D screens will be taken over by Alice in Wonderland at the beginning of March. If that wasn't the case, I'd say it would have a shot, but so many people want to see this movie in 3D that once it's not on those screens any more I think a lot of folks won't be going to see it anymore.

Still, the "have you seen it on a big screen?" buzz means that this will definitely be one for the record books. In short, Cameron has done it again.

AVATAR is getting high numbers due to the Holiday/Winter beak. It will drop like a rock next weekend. WIll NOT top TDK. DK had a much better opening weekend.

Avatar is awesome. I think it is better than Titanic and I can't wait to see what James Cameron does next.
