'New Moon' Smashes Midnight Box Office Records
In
Box Office, Industry
How big was the midnight opening for "The Twilight Saga: New Moon?" Big. OK, beyond big. Huge. According to Nikki Finke from Deadline Hollywood, unofficial estimates are that for the midnight shows, "New Moon" took in between $23 and $24 million. That beats previous records set by "The Dark Knight" ($18.4 million) and "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" ($22.2 million).
There has been a lot of speculation about just how big "New Moon" will be this week. Films like "The Dark Knight" and "Harry Potter" are a little bit easier to gauge because they are parts of existing franchises, open in the summer and target broader audiences. For a film like "Twilight" to be on the path of breaking all existing Friday records insanely huge.
Lsat year, the grosses for "Twilight" dropped a dramatic 49% between Friday and Saturday, and some rival studios are predicting the same drop for "New Moon." I'm not so sure. "Twilight"-mania has increased so much in the last year that I can see plenty of fans who were either unable to go on Friday night (tickets sold out) or want to return for seconds (or thirds) on Saturday.
We won't know the final numbers until Summit releases them later on, but one thing is for sure, "New Moon" is on its way into the history books one way or another.
Did you see "New Moon" at midnight? Do you plan on seeing it tonight? Let us know!
