'Paranormal Activity' Wins Weekend Box Office

 In  Horror, Box Office, Industry

The early box office results for the weekend are now out, and it looks like "Paranormal Activity" is the big winner!

The low-budget horror film took in an estimated $22 million across just under 2000 screens to easily win the weekend.

The final estimates for Lionsgate's "Saw VI" aren't in yet, but it looks like it grossed somewhere in the mid-teens after launching on more than 3000 screens.

This is the first time the "Saw" franchise has ever not won the opening weekend box office race.

What do you think about the ongoing phenomenon that is "Paranormal Activity?" Let us know in the comments!

I just can't wait to see it! I really don't even like scary movies but with all of the talk around this film, it's one I will definitely need to see. I think it's amazing that a movie made for so little can bring in so much at the box office.

Hey Liz0624! I am interested in checking out this film as well. I hadn't heard much about it until recently, but it looks interesting!
If you like this genre, you may also like The Fourth Kind when it is released. Check out the trailer here: ...

FlyBoyZombie - the trailer for The Fourth Kind freaks me out, too! I'd like to see it as well, but I usually end up covering my eyes like a little kid for most of the movie!

If only I'd known this was going to happen...why didn't someone from AMC talk about how much he expected Paranormal Activity to succeed? ...I hope Justin reads this. :)

Everyone is talking about this movie. It's like "The Blair Witch Project" meets "Cloverfield". People demanded this, they got it.

Personally I think this movie shows how much money people are willing to spend on a little bit of hype. My 14 year old son and I could make a better and much scarier film with a handy cam and night vision. Truly a waste of my time. See it if you want to, but be warned that you might want you money back.

The Blair Witch project was popular because the filmmakers did an excellent job of making the film feel real. Paranormal Activity and The Fourth Kind have been successful for this same reason.

Is anyone interested in creating a "Small Budget, Big Profit" group for fans of this genre?

I thought it stunk. The relationship betwen the main characters weren't realistic at all. And I've seen more scares in some of the crappy ghost-hunting shows that are on basic cable. All the good scares (INCLUDING THE ENDING) were given away in the commercial.

It was lame. It tried to be Blair Witch-- you can tell that from the ending.

You know what I read over on IMDB? Spielberg actually CHANGED the ending. And the original, from what I've read, would've been WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better. As in, it might have changed my overall opinion of the movie.
