'Speedy Gonzales' Races To The Big Screen

 In  Comedy, Animation

In the past few years there have been a number of animated characters brought to the big screen in a hybrid mix of CG animation and live action.  Films like "Garfield" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks" instantly come to mind.

Well get ready for the next one as it is being reported that New Line Studios is picking up speed with its development of a "Speedy Gonzales" movie with George Lopez in place to voice the ROUV (Rodent Of Unusual Velocity).

Like most kids, I watched a LOT of Looney Tunes, and I specifically remember thinking it was the greatest day in history when they finally had that episode where Speedy and the Road Runner actually had a race.  To this day I'm convinced it was the event that planted the seeds for such films as "Aliens vs Predator" and "Freedy vs Jason" to be made (not really... but it would make sense wouldn't it?).

No word yet if the antagonist in the film would be Speedy's long time nemesis Sylvester The Cat (aka "El Gringo Pussygato").

QUESTION: So what do you think of a "Speedy Gonzales" movie?  Is there another Looney Tunes character you think would be better suited for the big screen treatment?

I love all Looney Tunes characters, and am a fan of George Lopez but I'm not looking forward to seeing a CG Speedy or even seeing a Speedy movie. I rather just enjoy the old cartoon.

I too was a fan of Speedy but there is really no character in place beyond a lightning quick mouse. Alvin and the Chipmunks episodes by contrast generally had longer run times and thus more developed characters. I think a feature film based on a five minute cartoon may be a stretch. If that was the direction though maybe Bugs would be a better choice simply due to the volume of existing character content.

My favorite Loony Tunes was Foghorn Leghorn but he’s probably less known even than Speedy.

Although I liked Speedy as a kid I was more of a Marvin the Martian and Duck Dodgers fan. I see a character like Duck Dodgers someone that will entertain audiences more than the Speedy character would. Also I feel he's generally well known - he did have the video game. We'll just have to wait for the first trailers.

On the topic of Looney Tunes this would be a great group to create!
