Saoirse Ronan ("Hanna," "Atonement") has signed on to play the title role in "Mary, Queen of Scots," Coming Soon reports.

"Crowned Queen of Scotland when she was less than a year old, the 16th century leader was, later in life, forced to abdicate her throne soon thereafter was executed at age 18 for the her alleged involvement with an assassination attempt on the life of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth," the outlet writes of the famous rivalry.

Michael Hirst ("Elizabeth," "Elizabeth: The Golden Age") penned the script, producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are currently seeking a director.
