It's been over 7 years since Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez brought Miller's graphic novel "Sin City" to the big screen. Since that time there has been a lot of talk about returning to do another installment but very little actual movement. Even the most die hard of fans had grown pessimistic and doubtful that a "Sin City 2" would ever actually come to fruition.
That's all changed!
Dimension Films announced today that the sequel "Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" will be back in theaters on October 4th 2013.
At this point Mickey Rourke and Jessica Alba have been confirmed to return to their roles and more of the original cast are expected to reprise their characters from the original as well. On top of the returning cast the studio says "the remaining cast will be announced shortly with some big names expected to fill the roles of Sin City's newest characters yet to be seen in theaters."
I personally loved the original "Sin City", but not for the same reason that a lot of other fans did. Yes the visual style at the time was unique and bold and the over the top violence was a lot of fun… but for me the the brilliance of "Sin City" lay within the idea of the redemptive and captivating power of beauty in the world.
Each one of the three main characters played by Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis lived in a horrible, dark rotting world and each have seen/seen terrible things… but for each of them the smallest, slightest hints of beauty in the world motivated and drove them to extreme lengths. The innocence of a child, the legitimate affection in the arms of a prostitute… no matter how small or slight, the power of beauty in the world can drive a man, and "Sin City" illustrates that in a dark and profound way.
But let us know what YOU think. Did you enjoy the first "Sin City"? Are you excited for another installment? Which other cast members not already confirmed do you think are the most important to bring back?
