5 Actor Pairs Who’ve Played Couples More Than Once

February 12th, 20195 Actor Pairs Who’ve Played Couples More Than Once

It’s not easy finding actors who have great chemistry together, especially when directors need to cast a believable couple in a romantic drama or rom-com. But every once in a while, a pair of actors come together that have a real spark, and the audience falls in love right along with them.

Sometimes that chemistry is so amazing and believable that they find themselves playing love interests on the big screen again, much to our delight. Read on for five sets of actors who have — thankfully — played on-screen couples more than once.

The first and most obvious coupling is, of course, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The pair met when they were cast as husband and wife in MR. AND MRS. SMITH, a film about a married couple whose suburban life has become extremely boring and predictable — until they each discover that the other one is living a secret life as a professional assassin. Not only that, but they’ve both been assigned to kill each other.

Pitt and Jolie famously fell in love on the set of the 2005 action comedy, but they didn’t play an on-screen couple again until 10 years later, when they appeared in the romantic drama BY THE SEA, directed by Jolie herself. Unfortunately, the couple’s real-life marriage fell apart in 2016.

In 1998, Adam Sandler proved he could be a rom-com leading man (and a good one, at that) with THE WEDDING SINGER. Set in the ’80s, the film starred Sandler as a wedding singer whose fiancée leaves him on their wedding day. Things are looking down until he falls for a local catering waitress named Julia, played by Drew Barrymore.

The unlikely duo made for quite the charming pair, and they gave it another go in the quirky 2004 rom-com 50 FIRST DATES, in which Sandler plays a zookeeper who falls for a woman with a peculiar amnesia disorder. Her memory resets every morning, and she can’t remember the day before. It would be another 10 years before Sandler and Barrymore reunited on the big screen, this time in BLENDED, about a widowed dad who falls for a recently divorced mom.

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s romance in TITANIC was every bit as epic as the film itself. Winslet’s Rose is an upper-class passenger on the ill-fated voyage who falls for a scrappy artist named Jack who is staying on the lower decks. For years, fans wondered if and when we’d see the pair light up the silver screen again.

Thankfully, they got back together for 2008’s REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. Set in the ’50s, Winslet and DiCaprio play a married suburban couple whose daily lives have become so repetitive and predictable that it begins to tear them apart. Not quite the happy reunion we wanted, but it was still a good one.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are probably the most iconic duo to play an on-screen couple more than once. Their fictional love affair began with the 1990 film JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO and continued with Nora Ephron’s 1993 romance classic SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, about a woman who falls in love with a widower after hearing his story on the radio.

That one proved so popular and beloved that Hanks and Ryan got back together for the equally charming YOU’VE GOT MAIL (a remake of THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER) in which they play a pair of rival bookstore owners who fall in love online despite their hatred of each other.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling

Last but far from least are Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. America’s new sweetheart and everyone’s favorite imaginary boyfriend had blazing chemistry in the clever 2010 rom-com CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. The film starred Stone as a law school graduate who falls for Gosling’s womanizer despite her better sense.

Apparently, audiences weren’t the only ones taken by their chemistry: Stone and Gosling were coupled again for the 2013 gangster period drama GANGSTER SQUAD and again in 2016 for the award-winning romantic musical LA LA LAND.
