6 Female-First Movies Coming to Theatres

September 30th, 20196 Female-First Movies Coming to Theatres

The next several months will be bringing a lot of awesome women to your local AMC theatres, whether they’re in front of or behind the camera — or, in some cases, both! Or, for that matter, in the audience. Women rule.

Lucy in the Sky

Lucy In The Sky Natalie Portman has time and time again proven to be one of the most talented actresses currently working in the film industry, and she has the shiny hardware to prove it. Now, she is coming back to the big screen in LUCY IN THE SKY, a drama that tells the story of an astronaut who returns to Earth and can’t quite cope with ordinary life. Portman is surrounded by an outstanding cast, including Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, Dan Stevens, Ellen Burstyn, Colman Domingo and more, but as the titular Lucy, this is her film.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil The first MALEFICENT, released in 2014, wound up becoming the biggest hit of star Angelina Jolie's career, making over $750 million worldwide, so it's little surprise that the A-list actress is back wearing her giant horns in MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL. This story continues the prequel SLEEPING BEAUTY tale that was established with the first movie, finding the titular witch's relationship with her adopted daughter, Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), starting to unravel due to Aurora’s forthcoming nuptials and her relationship with the possessive Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer).

Terminator: Dark Fate

Terminator: Dark Fate Sarah Connor has always been the true hero of the TERMINATOR franchise, and this fall we will finally get to see the return of the brilliant Linda Hamilton in the role for TERMINATOR: DARK FATE. This will be the first time that the actress has played the character since 1991’s TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY, and this time we’ll see her not only once again opposite both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Edward Furlong, but surrounded by excellent up-and-comers Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, Gabriel Luna and Diego Boneta in a fight to save the future.

Charlie’s Angels

Charlie’s Angels The upcoming CHARLIE’S ANGELS is an exciting combination of not just women in front of the camera, but behind it as well. Having previously helmed PITCH PERFECT 2, Elizabeth Banks is back in the director's chair, and she has assembled a fantastic group of women to play the titular group of kick-ass private detectives: Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska. It should be an action-filled adventure and could very well become one of the biggest surprises of late 2019.

Frozen II

Frozen II Walt Disney Animation Studios blew audiences away in 2013 with the release of FROZEN, winning Oscars® and becoming the biggest hit in the studio's history. And now, six years later, fans are going to have the opportunity to return to the land of Arendelle for an adventure that will answer the question as to why Elsa (Idina Menzel) has her special ice abilities and Anna (Kristen Bell) doesn’t. Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck are back as directors, as well as Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad and Santino Fontana in their respective roles from the first movie. They will also be joined by brilliant performers Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Fans have now been following along with the journey of Daisy Ridley’s Rey for four years, and her story will be coming to a head in a major way this December with the release of STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER. This is, of course, the final chapter in the legendary Skywalker Saga, and it won’t just be Rey’s tale that is coming to an end; however, audiences are definitely fascinated to see where her story is going after both STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI.
