Ready to get into the Halloween spirit? Lucky for those who love scary stuff, October is full of movie chills. Some of these releases are lighthearted and made for the whole kooky family; others are a bit more disturbing. Check out the new spooky movies heading to theatres this month.

Get ready to see the Clown Prince of Crime in a brand-new light. Co-writer and director Todd Phillips takes a deep dive into the infamous character's origin, painting him as a hero who slowly turns into a maniacal villain. In the film's trailer, we see star Joaquin Phoenix disappear into the iconic role as he dances through the streets of Gotham and introduces himself as the one and only Joker. JOKER is rated R. (October 4)

The Addams Family

They're creepy and they're kooky. Mysterious and spooky. They're... ah, you know the rest. The Addams Family is back on the big screen, for the first time as animated characters that closely resemble creator Charles Addams' original drawings. In the new outing, the peculiar family packs up and moves to New Jersey, where worlds collide as they meet their cheery neighbors and explore their strange city. (October 11)

The Lighthouse

Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson quickly slide off the deep end in THE LIGHTHOUSE, a new black and white psychological thriller set during the turn of the 19th century. The actors play two lighthouse keepers who arrive on a remote New England island for four weeks of service, but the isolation and monotony are too much to bare, especially for Pattinson's character, who becomes increasingly paranoid and haunted by strange apparitions. (Limited Release October 18)

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) unleashes her wrath as Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) prepares to marry Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson) — but the impending nuptials are only the tip of Maleficent's rage. Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) tells the dark fairy, "Now, [Aurora] will finally get the love of a real mother. Tonight, I consider Aurora my own." That's when all hell breaks loose, and we see a fire rise in Maleficent that will have consequences beyond what we know from the fairy tale. (October 18)

Zombieland: Double Tap

Ten years after ZOMBIELAND, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) are still fighting off the undead, who have evolved into faster, more ravenous super-zombies. All things considering, the dysfunctional family is doing fine posted up in the White House, until Little Rock runs off with a hippie stranger, and the remaining crew must venture across America's heartland to find her. (October 18)

Our smartphones hold our entire lives — from our daily appointments to treasured photos — and COUNTDOWN imagines a world where our devices control our lives, in the most literal sense. There's a new app that can predict exactly when a person will die, and a young nurse discovers she has only three days left. With time ticking away and a mysterious figure haunting her, she must find a way to save her life before time runs out. (October 25)
