An Ensemble Cast Lights Up The Current War

October 21st, 2019An Ensemble Cast Lights Up The Current War

A movie about the race to light America demands an electrifying cast, and THE CURRENT WAR is set to deliver on October 25. Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, the upcoming drama is based on the true story of the “war of the currents,” in which the nation’s brightest minds battled over which electricity system would become the standard.

The “war” took place from the late 1880s into the early 1890s and involved cutthroat tactics from all sides to try to discredit the competition. Essentially, the war sparked one of the first and greatest corporate feuds in American history. See a peek in the trailer below.

Now that you’re a bit more familiar with the story of THE CURRENT WAR, let’s check out the key players and the stars who play them.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Best known as Dr. Stephen Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Benedict Cumberbatch co-stars in THE CURRENT WAR as Thomas Edison, who’s on the verge of bringing electricity to Manhattan with his radical new direct current (DC) technology.

Tom Holland

Fellow MCU star Tom Holland is also in THE CURRENT WAR, playing business magnate Samuel Insull. During the war of the currents, Insull served as the head of Edison's Chicago-based electrical enterprise.

Michael Shannon

Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon (THE SHAPE OF WATER) co-stars in THE CURRENT WAR as George Westinghouse. The inventor and entrepreneur started to develop his own competing DC system until he learned about alternating current (AC) systems, which could distribute electricity over long distances much more economically than DC.

Nicholas Hoult

Nicholas Hoult, who starred in this year's TOLKIEN, plays Nikola Tesla, a pioneer of AC technology — and former apprentice of Edison. Tesla’s AC induction motor and related polyphase AC patents were licensed by Westinghouse to build a completely integrated AC system.

Supporting Cast

In THE CURRENT WAR, you’ll also see Matthew Macfadyen (PRIDE & PREJUDICE) as J.P. Morgan, who invested in Edison to create the Edison Electricity Company and distribute light to the masses. Katherine Waterston (above, FANTASTIC BEASTS franchise) and Tuppence Middleton (the upcoming DOWNTON ABBEY) also make appearances as Marguerite Westinghouse and Mary Edison, respectively.

Only one man will rise. Set your reminder to get tickets at AMC for opening weekend, October 25!
