Big Doctor Strange Moments In The Marvel Movies

April 21st, 2022Big Doctor Strange Moments In The Marvel Movies

Since the introduction of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange in the 2016 Marvel movie DOCTOR STRANGE, the surgeon-turned-sorcerer has become not only one of the comic world’s most powerful characters but also one of the major players in the MCU. In that time, Doctor Strange has made appearances in four additional movies, including AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS: ENDGAME, where he has used his powers, and the powerful Time Stone, to help fight off powerful and otherworldly foes as well as help his fellow heroes fulfill their destiny.

Before we jump into DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, which opens May 6 in AMC Theatres nationwide, let’s act like we have the Time Stone, slow things down and take a trip down memory lane to revisit some of the sorcerer’s biggest moments yet.

‘Defeating’ Dormammu - Doctor Strange

In the 2016 Marvel movie, DOCTOR STRANGE, Stephen Strange is transformed from a successful yet extremely arrogant neurosurgeon into a powerful sorcerer after embarking on a journey to heal his hands that had been broken beyond repair following a terrible car wreck. Through the guidance of Tilda Swinton’s The Ancient One, Strange becomes aware of the mystical arts and learns how to control time with the Eye of Agamotto, a.k.a. the Time Stone.

Following the death of the Ancient One and the near-destruction of Earth, Strange enters the Dark Dimension to take on Dormammu. But instead of fighting the inter-dimensional being with physical violence, Strange instead uses the Time Stone to trap the two in an endless time loop, one that the sorcerer will stop if Dormammu agrees to leave the planet and take his zealots with him. After his numerous attempts to kill Strange are unsuccessful, Dormammu begs to be released from the prison and agrees to leave Earth alone for all of time.

Battle On Titan - Avengers: Infinity War

Few of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes had more of an impact in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR than Doctor Strange, especially when you consider how much of the first half of the movie revolves around him, with Hulk, crashing into the Sanctum Sanctorum, Strange summoning Tony Stark, and the Black Order trying to pry the Time Stone from his hands. But, some of Strange’s biggest moments in the epic crossover event come in the second half of the movie, when the ragtag group of superheroes try to defeat Thanos on Titan.

Everything about this fight is epic from the various heroes, like Spider-Man and Star Lord jumping through Strange’s portals to Thanos throwing a moon at the Avengers and Iron Man showing off his new tech. The moment that looks the most impressive, however, is when the Mad Titan turns his attention to Strange, who transforms his deadly energy blasts into butterflies and makes dozens of copies of himself to hold down the villain in an attempt to steal the gauntlet.

Handing Over The Time Stone - Avengers: Infinity War

One of the most shocking moments of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR takes place when Doctor Strange willingly hands over the Time Stone to Thanos just as the Mad Titan was about to finish off a wounded Tony Stark. Stark’s reaction, much like those of the millions in theatres around the world, was of total shock, as he was not yet aware of Strange’s master plan.

Little did anyone know — well, besides Doctor Strange — but Stark’s survival is key to the one possible future where the Avengers were able to defeat Thanos, just not at that moment. Strange, having so much faith in Stark and the universe, is willing to sacrifice himself and billions throughout the cosmos is an incredible act of heroism. There are few quotes in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe that carry as much weight as “We’re in the endgame now.”

Avengers Assemble - Avengers: Endgame

Although we don’t see Doctor Strange in AVENGERS: ENDGAME until two hours and 15 minutes into its runtime, his arrival, along with that of every other hero turned to dust by Thanos’ snap, is one of those moments no one who saw the movie will ever forget. Of course, this is referring to the “Avengers Assemble” moment when it appears that all hope has been lost and Captain America is left to fight Thanos and his massive army alone.

The look on Captain America’s face as he hears and then sees a revived Falcon coming out of one of Doctor Strange’s portals is the stuff of legend and kicks off one of the greatest moments in the history of movies. It just gets better from there; more and more portals open as Alan Silvestri’s score swells, finally building up to Cap saying the famous words: “Avengers… assemble!” I have goosebumps, you have goosebumps, we all have goosebumps just thinking about that epic moment.

Holding Back The Multiverse - Spider-Man: No Way Home

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME is full of great moments like the arrival of Doctor Octopus, the three versions of Peter Parker meeting, and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker finally being redeemed. There are also some great Doctor Strange moments, like his attempt to cast a spell to make the world forget that Peter Parker was Spider-Man and then later on when he and the Web-Slinger fought in the Mirror Dimension. However, the part of the movie that shows what Strange is capable of takes place in the film’s final and epic battle.

During the fight atop the Statue of Liberty, Doctor Strange returns from the Mirror Dimension to end the madness entirely by reversing the spell that caused the multiverse to open in the first place and send everyone back to their original universes. Before he can do so, he has to wait for the three Spider-Men to cure the villains. While doing so, Strange holds back the Multiverse to prevent even more villains from arriving on the scene, leading to an incredibly tense and dazzling scene. The plan eventually works, Strange reverses the spell, and the world forgets Peter Parker ever existed.

Only time will tell what kind of moments await Stephen Strange in the future. The only way to find out is by watching DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, which opens May 6 in AMC Theatres nationwide.
