Thanos wiped away half the universe in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. Luckily, Captain Marvel is flying in to save the day. She’ll appear in the next Avengers movie, but before Captain Marvel joins Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in their fight against Thanos, she’ll headline her own film. CAPTAIN MARVEL opens on March 8, 2019.
The ’90s-set film follows Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who gains superpowers and becomes a warrior with the alien Kree. She joins an intergalactic Kree squad, known as Starforce. Carol doesn’t stay away from her homeworld for long, though. She eventually returns to Earth, where she meets S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury and Phil Coulson.
Together, they face off against the shape-shifting Skrulls, who plan on invading our planet. As we’ve come to expect from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s a lot of secrecy surrounding CAPTAIN MARVEL — here are the six biggest questions we have about the film.
How Does Carol Get Powers?
As an origin story, CAPTAIN MARVEL will explain how Carol Danvers became a superhero. We aren’t exactly sure, however, how the film will handle her transformation. Carol has had a few different origins in the comics, but two stand out in particular. In the first, she’s caught in an explosion alongside a Kree warrior called Mar-Vell, which spliced their DNA together and made her part-human, part-Kree.
That origin was changed in 2018. Danvers was revealed to be the offspring of a Kree and a human father, thus making the aforementioned accident a mere catalyst for her powers. The CAPTAIN MARVEL teaser shows Carol engulfed in an explosion, which seemingly results in her gaining new abilities. It’s not clear, however, whether this accident was the source of her power, or whether it simply awakened her latent alien genes.
What About Carol’s Past Life?
When CAPTAIN MARVEL starts, Carol Danvers is already an intergalactic Kree warrior. Circumstances of her departure from Earth are a big question. In the film’s teaser, which offers a few glimpses of Danvers’ childhood and her years in the Air Force, Carol says she’s unsure whether her Earth memories are real.
Carol’s inability to remember a non-alien life makes it clear that there’s a hidden story behind her transition from human to intergalactic operative. At one point in the teaser, Carol is caught in an alien machine that appears to be manipulating her head. We’re guessing this plays a part in her memory struggles. There’s even a hint that her departure from Earth wasn’t necessarily voluntary.
How Will The Film Tie Into The MCU?
CAPTAIN MARVEL has important connections to previous films. Ronan, Nick Fury, Korath The Pursuer and Phil Coulson are all slated to appear. We’re curious to see how the film’s mythology impacts the superhero universe. CAPTAIN MARVEL takes place in the ’90s, when heroes like Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America and Thor were yet to surface.
So what effects will the appearance of shape-shifting aliens and a super-powered space warrior have on the franchise? There’s also the matter of how CAPTAIN MARVEL will tie into the events of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. During the film’s post-credits scene, Nick Fury pages Carol to help with the aftermath of Thanos’s snap, so we’re excited to see how her solo adventure sets up her role in AVENGERS 4.
What About Monica Rambeau’s Superhero Identity?
Maria Rambeau, Air Force pilot, and Carol’s best friend, is key to the CAPTAIN MARVEL story. Comic book fans will recognize her as the mother of Monica Rambeau, a major player in Marvel Comics who at one point became Captain Marvel herself. Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Monica exists in the MCU as Maria’s daughter, which opens up some exciting possibilities.
The MCU tends to take its time with some superhero journeys. The biggest examples are Hope van Dyne and James Rhodes. It’s possible that CAPTAIN MARVEL will lay the groundwork for Monica’s heroic career. Even though she’s a child in this movie, these characters eventually catch up to the timeline in AVENGERS 4. Monica could be an adult by that point, which makes her superhero transformation a real possibility.
Who Is Jude Law’s Character?
Jude Law’s role is one of the biggest mysteries of the film. Initially, we heard Law would be playing Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel whose DNA turns Carol into a superhero. Marvel Studios has made a big effort to keep his identity a secret, however. So far, all we know is that he’s a devout Kree soldier who leads the elite Starforce, alongside Carol Danvers.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Law revealed that his character shared a special relationship with Carol. While that friendship could hint at him being Mar-Vell, the MCU has made major changes to its source material in previous films. We likely won’t know for sure who the actor is playing until CAPTAIN MARVEL opens.
Will The Skrulls Threaten The MCU?
Every superhero film needs a villain. In CAPTAIN MARVEL, Carol Danvers will face off against the Skrulls. They’re a race of shape-shifting aliens hellbent on universe domination. The Skrulls have played a pivotal role in Marvel Comics history. They’ve been the focal point of major storylines like the Kree-Skrull War and Secret Invasion.
Will they have a bigger presence in the MCU beyond CAPTAIN MARVEL? With the ten-year Thanos storyline concluding in AVENGERS 4, Marvel Studios could be looking for a new overarching threat. As proven by the Secret Invasion storyline, which dealt with the Skrulls infiltrating Earth, the villainous extraterrestrials could be prime candidates to take up that position.
CAPTAIN MARVEL flies into theaters on March 8, 2019.
