Dave Bautista: More Than Drax

July 3rd, 2019Dave Bautista: More Than Drax

It’s very easy to get typecast in Hollywood. Just ask action stars from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sly Stallone to Keanu Reeves. Once the industry sees you in one role, they try very hard to keep shoehorning you into the same mold, over and over.

For Dave Bautista, that role is probably Drax the Destroyer, the loyal and lethal member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Yet, while Bautista has played Drax repeatedly since the character was introduced on screen in 2014’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, he also has branched out in several different movies to show off his range.

His next attempt will be playing an undercover agent who needs to commandeer an Uber driven by Kumail Nanjiani (THE BIG SICK) in the buddy comedy STUBER. But it’s the latest in a growing line of enjoyable roles that demonstrate that former pro wrestler Bautista is destined to have a long and varied career on the big screen. Which of these roles was your favorite?

Mr. Hinx

James Bond movies need memorable henchmen, and Dave Bautista’s Mr. Hinx fell into that strong-but-silent type. Hinx works for Spectre, and he and James Bond (Daniel Craig) cross paths several times, though the brutal confrontation on a train — where Hinx almost gets the upper hand — ends up being too much for this savage adversary.

Sapper Morton

There’s a mystery at the heart of BLADE RUNNER 2049, and it stems from the discovery of Bautista’s character, Sapper Morton. He’s a Nexus-8 model of Replicant, and he has found a way to outlive the protocol of Replicants (who have short life spans). Bautista can never avoid the physicality of his frame, but BLADE RUNNER 2049 director Denis Villenueve saw past that brawn to tap into the hulking actor’s emotion and intelligence to kick off this twisty sci-fi thriller.

Everest

HOTEL ARTEMIS is exactly the type of offbeat project we hope that Dave Bautista continues to accept. Similar to the Continental in the world of JOHN WICK, the hotel is a hideaway for hardened criminals who need medical assistance. And Everest is the assistant to the head nurse (played by Jodie Foster). While the character is meant to heal wounds, he’s also capable of inflicting damage, again leaning into both sides of Bautista’s capabilities in one original film.

Fans will be able to catch Dave Bautista in STUBER on July 12 and the comedy MY SPY on August 23. And we hope he will begin filming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 with James Gunn in the near future.
