Kristen Stewart's Career of Surprises
One of the most formidable acting talents of her generation, Kristen Stewart has built a career that's been a case study in evolution at its finest. From her days as a child actor with bit parts in movies like THE FLINTSTONES IN VIVA ROCK VEGAS, to her most recent would-be blockbusters, the path of her resume is as exciting as it is impressive.
Kicking off her career in Hollywood, Stewart mixed it up with indies like THE SAFETY OF OBJECTS, thrillers such as David Fincher’s PANIC ROOM, and eventually saw herself moving into family-friendly blockbusters like CATCH THAT KID and ZATHURA: A SPACE ADVENTURE. That was all setting the stage for the next phase in her acting canon, as both the world of indies and blockbusters would be calling again. While Kristen Stewart still kept her footing in the door of indie films through efforts like ADVENTURELAND and THE RUNAWAYS, it was the role of Bella Swan in THE TWILIGHT SAGA that would catapult her to international superstardom.
Between 2008’s TWILIGHT and 2012’s THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2, Stewart and the box office were best friends, and her profile increased exponentially with her performance of a young woman who finds herself drawn into the world of the supernatural, through her romance with a mysterious young vampire.
And yet, some would say that Kristen Stewart’s most exciting part was yet to come, particularly once she started working with French director Olivier Assayas. While the actor has always split her time between the independent and major studio ways of filmmaking, the one-two punch of both CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA and PERSONAL SHOPPER gave Stewart a serious boost in the former — so much so that she became the first American to win the prestigious César Award for Best Supporting Actress in CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA.
But as tides ebb and flow, so do people’s moods, and Kristen Stewart is no exception, as she has two films heading to theatres that bring her back to the side of the blockbuster. First off, audiences will get to see Stewart in a new generation of action-adventure in Elizabeth Banks’ legacyquel to the CHARLIE’S ANGELS franchise this November. And in January 2020, she’ll face off against something mysterious and deadly at the bottom of the ocean in the sci-fi thriller UNDERWATER.
If there was one word to describe Kristen Stewart’s career, it has to be changing. With a flair for the unpredictable and an unflappable professionalism, there’s no telling what’s going to come for the actor next, and that’s part of the fun.
