Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok is turning out to be this year's biggest surprise. Though fans expected great things from Hunt for the Wilderpeople director Taika Waititi, few would have expected the movie to become the highest rated Marvel film of all time (according to Rotten Tomatoes). With the movie storming the box office, it's clear that Ragnarok is a beast of the film.
Yet sharp writing, good acting and great direction aren't the only things Ragnarok has up its sleeve. The movie also features a major actor in a delightful cameo appearance — I'm talking, of course, about Matt Damon playing an Asgardian actor playing Loki in a farcical play within the film. And as it turns out, this hilarious cameo may not be Damon's last stint in the MCU.
How The Cameo Was Bourne
Those who haven't had the opportunity to see Ragnarok may be unaware that Matt Damon, Sam Neil and Luke Hemsworth all cameo as Asgardian actors performing the events of Thor: The Dark World. Their roles are based on Loki, Odin and Thor respectively, and the play within the film is a clever way to get fans up to speed, while revealing how Loki has memorialized himself in Asgardian history, even as he is currently disguised as Odin.
This hilarious scene came about due to lead Chris Hemsworth's friendship with Jason Bourne actor Matt Damon, as MCU President Kevin Feige revealed to Collider recently. After the idea of the scene had occurred to Waititi, he wondered who they could get to play Loki.
At one point, off handedly, Mr. Hemsworth goes, 'Well what if I ask my friend Matt?' I said, 'Matt who?' He said, 'My friend, Matt Damon.' [...] The next thing I know, Matt Damon is on set in a full Loki costume, full Loki wig. It is very surreal and very amazing. What an awesome thing, for [Damon] to come down here for his friend. It was purely based on his friendship with Hemsworth that he came and did this.
In another amusing twist, Damon's portrayal of "Loki" is also a reference to the movie Dogma, in which Damon played a rogue angel called, you guessed it, Loki.
Matt Damon In MCU Phase 4
While the fact that Damon choosing to cameo in a cameo film for a friend is a big enough deal on its own, Matt Damon may not be done with the Mcu yet. Feige recounted Damon's interest in stepping into the Marvel world saying:
I think, as he said to me on the carpet last night, that look, there he is now a stock as Asgardian player somewhere wandering the universe with, spoiler, Asgard gone. Who knows? It could be the adventures of a hard-working actor, Asgardian actor, in the future.
It would certainly be interesting to see Marvel and Matt Damon collaborating further in the future, and this kind of everyman character would be perfect for Waititi if he chooses to direct another Thor movie. And after all, Marvel is just beginning plans for a new phase for its superhero world, and adding Damon to the mix would be a big win for the comic book company.
There's no doubt that fans would love to see Damon playing an Asgardian actor who becomes a superhero after his planet is destroyed. Of course, Damon's continued role in the MCU is far from a reality yet, but still, stranger things have happened... like, an Oscar-winner cameoing as an up and coming actor on another planet.
