After the success of “Precious,” one of the projects director Lee Daniels was looking at was one called “The Butler” about a butler in the White House in 1954 who served through eight presidencies. Daniels went on to make “The Paperboy” instead but is now coming back to the project.
Hugh Jackman, Mila Kunis, John Cusack, David Oyelowo and Oprah Winfrey are set to star. Liam Neeson could be cast as Lyndon B. Johnson.
Daniels said this of the movie:
“‘The Butler’ is a story very near and dear to my heart, about a butler (Eugene Allen) who has lived with six or seven Presidents….This guy went from picking cotton to Eisenhower to today. It’s our ‘Gone With the Wind,’ and it’s my ‘Gone With the Wind.’ It’s my ‘Forrest Gump.’ We’ve never seen the world from an African American’s eyes, pre-Civil Rights to today.”
