Outside AVENGERS: Five Marvel Heroes We Want On The Big Screen

By AMC May 8, 2012

With the success of THE AVENGERS ($700 million and counting) Marvel has their biggest hit to date and it's obvious that audiences want to see super heroes on the big screen. And there's a lot of super heroes in the mighty Marvel universe.

We already know that sequels to Iron Man, Thor and Captain America are on the way, with a new Hulk movie possibly on the horizon. What else is there? A brand new Wolverine film is in development, Ant-Man is being written, rumors of a Black Widow film have been rumbling as of late, a Spider-Man reboot is coming out and Deadpool has been lingering in development hell for years.

But what are some other Marvel characters that deserve their own movie?

We thought it would be fun to take a look at five cool Marvel super heroes that deserve their time in the spotlight.

#5 Machine Man

Machine Man was always a favorite of mine growing up reading comics. The last of a series of sentient robots, Z2P45-9-X-51 (his real name), was the one robot who didn't go mad when it achieved sentience. X-51 was given a human face and took the name Aaron Stack. Made from adamantium, the same composite of Wolverine's skeletal figure, Machine Man possesses an above normal intellect, superhuman strength, and is powered by solar energy. He'd be fun to watch in his own movie because he can extend his arms and legs up to 100 feet, and his fingers all contain a variety of weapons, from firing .357 Magnum bullets to pulse-code modulators. And for added measure, he can even fly. A science fiction Marvel movie would be a real treat for fans if done correctly.

#4 Power Man and Iron Fist

The popular heroes for hire were two of the baddest boys on the block in the Marvel universe, and when teamed together, were practically untouchable.

Daniel Rand (Iron Fist) was taught martial arts under the tutelage of Lei Kung, and was such an exceptional student that at the age of 19, gained the power of the Iron Fist by defeating the dragon Shou-Lao. Rand is able to focus his chi into his fist, creating an “iron fist” that can pretty much smash through anything while leaving him unharmed. He has extraordinary levels of strength, speed and agility.

His partner Power Man (Luke Cage) isn't one for finesse like Iron Fist. Possessing superhuman strength and skin that's as hard as titanium, Power Man can plow through most enemies without so much as breaking a sweat. He's a nice counter-balance to Iron Fist, though Iron Fist does teach him martial arts to make him a more effective fighter. I think Michael Jai-White and Scott Adkins would be awesome as the Heroes For Hire.

#3 Doctor Strange

For some reason Doctor Strange has yet to gain traction in the Marvel movie universe. The Sorcerer Supreme, who has been around since the 60's, is still a popular Marvel character with comic book fans. The “mightiest magician in the cosmos,” Strange gets his powers from a variety of sources, including the Vishanti and Octessence. There isn't a lot that Strange can't do. He's able to astral project, teleport, use telepathy and summon energy blasts from his hands. He can even resurrect the dead, create his own food and water (he would win Survivor hands down), stop time, and can even restore an entire universe. He's one of the most powerful super heroes in the Marvel universe. With a huge laundry list of villains to fight, visual effects teams would have a field day with a big budget Doctor Strange movie.

#2 Black Panther

The Black Panther (T'Challa) is one of those Marvel super heroes that actors like Michael Jai-White and Idris Elba have been chomping at the bit to play. The first black superhero in mainstream comics, the Black panther is the chief of the Panther Tribe of Wakanda in Africa. He has superhuman acute senses, speed, agility and strength. He has a resistance to magic and even uses his own magical artifacts. He's trained in various forms of African martial arts and is an expert gymnast and acrobat. He would be an incredible hero to watch on the big screen and a number of actors would jump at the chance to be able to portray him.

#1 Moon Knight

One of the most overlooked Marvel heroes is Marc Spector, also known as Moon Knight. Given his powers by the Egyptian moon god of vengeance, Khonshu, Spector is a wealthy man with a shady past who creates different identities to remain close to the streets and to also mask his powers and wealth. Moon Knight is an expert and hand-to-hand combat, a skilled acrobat and gymnast, and is skilled with most weapons, including darts and boomerangs. Depending on the phase of the moon, Spector can have the strength of up to ten men, though no one is sure just how strong he can actually get. His multiple personalities and aggressive demeanor make him resistance to some psychic attacks. Imagine him as Batman, but three times as unhinged. He could be a lot of fun to watch on the big screen.

Runners up: Dazzler, Bishop, Longshot, Cable, Carnage, Cloak & Dagger, Power Pack (for the kids), Sub-Mariner, Psylocke, New Mutants.
