DiCaprio Was To Play Riddler In THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

It's funny how much your perception of certain iconic film franchises changes when you look back at who was SUPPOSED to play major characters before the parts ended up with someone else who we now completely identify those characters with. For example, did you know Will Smith was supposed to play Neo in "The Matrix" movies? Did you know what Tom Selleck was originally supposed to be Indiana Jones in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" before backing out to take the lead role in the TV series "Magnum P.I."?

And hey did you hear… Leonardo DiCaprio was at one time picked out by the studio to play The Riddler in the upcoming "The Dark Knight Rises", which will be the final installment of the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale Batman franchise.

Series writer David Goyer recently revealed that in a very early meeting between himself, Christopher Nolan and the Warner Bros. execs, the WB people decreed that they "obviously" wanted The Riddler as the villain in the final installment and that they had picked Leonardo DiCaprio to play the part.

Goyer doesn't explain or elaborate on how their minds changed, but it does offer up some wonderful speculation opportunities. Imagine how different "The Dark Knight Rises" would look in the trailers right now and how completely different the story would had WB and Nolan had gone with the idea of DiCaprio at The Riddler instead of Bane? The difference I would guess, is knight and day (see the clever little play on words I did there?

Personally, despite the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the absolute best actors working today (and adding pure talent is never a bad idea) I feel that if this is indeed the final installment of the current series, that Bane was ABSOLUTELY the way to go. The significance of Bane can not be overstated. The man, who in the comics, literally breaks Batman's back and sends Bruce Wayne out of the comics for a long time while others picked up the "Mantel of the Bat" while Bruce was out of action. THIS is the character you need to end on if not The Joker. And so, while I would have loved a Leo Riddler, as the last film in the series they absolutely HAD to go with Bane.

But what do YOU think? Would you have rather seen a Leo Riddler? Are you glad they went with Bane? Let us know in the comments section below and don't forget to TWEET and LIKE this post using the buttons below!
