Fans of this summer’s superhero smash (yep) “The Avengers” have been anxious to hear whether Joss Whedon, the ensemble film’s helmer and scribe, would return for the sequel.
Well Slashfilm broke the news today that yes, indeed, he will.
The director had hedged a bit about a return to the Marvel universe previously, saying:
“It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”
But in today’s Walt Disney Investors Conference Call it was announced that the prolific creator is not only attached to write and direct “The Avengers 2” but he will also assist in the development of the "Avengers" inspired long-lead ABC live-action television series.
Here is an excerpt from Marvel's official statement:
"Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live-action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe."
We are delighted with the news and look forward to seeing what Whedon will bring to this next installment in “The Avengers” franchise.
What do you think? Are you happy to hear about Whedon’s return?
