Previewing a trailer in front of one of the year’s most anticipated films to a similar fan base, is one of the easiest ways to excite your target audience. News hit today that the trailer for Warner Bros. upcoming “Man of Steel” is going to preview in front of Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”. Not to be outdone, 20th Century Fox will use the same film to preview their trailer for “The Wolverine”, starring Hugh Jackman.
There is a ton of buzz surrounding both films as they have built-in audiences, both from fanboys and those less familiar with comic-book folklore, that are still drawn to the A-List celebrities and epic sets.
Warner Bros. has done a stellar job at building excitement for Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel”, much like they did for “The Dark Knight Trilogy”, as they have released next to nothing in promotional materials, leaving much up to the eager imagination. Snyder said the film will be, “A more serious version of Superman. We took the mythology seriously”. With that said, devotees are curious to see if Christopher Nolan's involvement as the producer helped shape the tone to mirror his grittier and darker take on the genre and if Snyder strayed away from the more gimmicky tone he often explores.
Fans are hopeful that James Mangold’s “The Wolverine”, as he describes as a darker noir tale, will redeem itself from the last "Wolverine Origins" story that fell a bit short. Jackman described Logan's (a.k.a Wolverine) next epic as being a standalone adventure but Mangold has gone on record to say that the events take place after the third film, “X-Men: The Last Stand”.
Once we see the trailers, it will be interesting to see if all the hype and descriptions surrounding both films hold up and if any of these questions are answered.
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” travels to AMC Theatres on December 14th 2012, with “Man of Steel” flying behind opening June 14th 2013 and “Wolverine” opening on July 26th 2013, at an AMC Theatres near you.
**Director James Mangold just confirmed that "The Wolverine" trailer will NOT debut in front of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and that we won't get the first glimpse of the film until 2013**
