Last week it was announced that Ming-na Wen (television's "E.R." and "Stargate Universe") was cast in Joss Whedon’s ABC pilot "S.H.I.E.L.D." as Agent Melinda May. Agent May is described as "an ace pilot and an expert on weapons" who's time as a soldier has left her damaged.

The actress joins Clark Gregg (the only other cast member announced to date) who is set to star in the show reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulson, who he, of course, portrayed in "Iron Man", "Thor" and Whedon's "The Avengers".

Fans were devastated to lose Coulson in "The Avengers" and delighted when Gregg was cast in the planned pilot. But the casting did raise some questions about where the series will fit in the overall Marvel universe: Will it be a prequel? Will Coulson be a cybernetic version of himself in the show? Or will the series break entirely and exist as its own entity?

Well, it looks as though, whatever the particulars are, this will be an original concept (though based in Marvel's created world and characters).

AMC had the opportunity to speak with Wen at the red carpet premiere for Disney's animated adventure "Wreck-It-Ralph" last night where we spoke a bit about what she is doing to prepare for the role.

When asked if she is delving into the comic-book mythology, the actress indicated that the show will not necessarily stick with the comic canon and is being conceived of as more of an original piece that Whedon is developing with Stan Lee.

Take a look below!

The series is being developed as a part of Whedon's expansive 3-year exclusive deal with Marvel which includes directing the upcoming "The Avengers 2" and a consultation role in the overall development of the Marvel cinematic universe.

Fans who were worried about Whedon's distinctive voice being devoted solely to adaptations for several years may be excited to hear that the prolific creator will be bringing his own original concepts, vision and flavor to the project.

We will keep you updated as details emerge.

Admire bryan singer story telling, not easy if you introducing a large cast.. As someone who do not know anything about x-men lore or identify himself as superhero geek.. His x-men 2000 film grab my interest on the series.. Still remember that powerful opening scene, the nazi concentration camp.. really set the theme of the series.. Found some of the other superhero movies.. Too comical for my taste still,.. Will see this movie on the first day of opening..

    1) Daredevil was ten years ago, and its problems were the director and script writers' fault. 2) Maybe but look at James Bond and hell even Batman throughout the years, people will get over it. 3) I want to tell you to check out the Town and Hollywoodland to see him act well, but you'd seem too hell bent to ever change your mind.
