Hollywood’s fascination with gangsters, zoot suits, old cars and organized crime, runs deep. For decades, esteemed directors have tackled the popular subject to feed to an eager audience. Now director Ruben Fleischer has what he hopes will become the next big gangster film of this generation.
Warner Bros.' "Gangster Squad" explores a true story set in the 1940's and 1950's when the Los Angeles Police Department had to bend the rules to keep the East Coast mafia, including mob leader Mickey Cohen, out of their territory. The film boasts an incredible cast starring Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Sean Penn and Emma Stone.
Fleischer is known for his unique approach to comedies such as the critically acclaimed "Zombieland" starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone and "30 Minutes or Less" also starring Jess Eisenberg. This film marks Fleischer’s first big-screen attempt to cross genres. In order to prep for their individual roles, he gave each actor a couple of classic gangster films to watch and study which exemplified the tone and style he was striving for.
In addition to the leads of the film, the supporting cast is also fantastic and includes Giovanni Ribisi, Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña and Frank Grillo.
