It's been quite a ride following the news around the sequel "G.I. Joe: Retaliation". Yesterday, we had the opportunity to chat with director Jon M. Chu and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, about the film. We watched an exclusive clip and they helped shed some light on the delay of the film, the 3D process and the experience behind the huge blockbuster.
We all know in this industry, that film rumors spread like wildfire. Di Bonaventura finally put a big one to rest. "There were no reshoots. Channing Tatum's character is the same now as it was months ago".
Sorry Tatum fans, his role in the film may not be as large as you might have hoped. Fear not though, you still have good ol' Bruce Willis and the charismatic Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, to feed your appetite.
Di Bonaventura also discussed the strength of the post-conversion 3D addition. "The audience comes to this picture to have fun. The 3D component adds a dynamic, playful and fun aspect. It makes scenes appear more mythological."
On the pressure of adhering to a comic-book franchise with a big following, he states, "If you're not evolving forward, it's not going to work. I always consult at least 10 big fans of the franchise to see how far I can push it."
Director Chu explains how he mixed iconic characters and various elements to form one cool, cohesive theme. "You want the humor, you want the camaraderie. You want the ninjas right up against the military."
For Chu, he was a big fan of the franchise growing up, so being a part of this film was incredible. "I wanted the Snake Eyes I played with as a kid to come alive on the big screen. Bringing the Hiss tank to life was like a dream come true."
