Johnny Depp is taking a break from his days as a pirate, to embrace zoot suits and tommy guns again. Set to star as notorious gangster Whitey Bulger, Depp will be seen in the upcoming Universal Pictures film "Black Mass".
Being helmed by Barry Levinson ("Wag the Dog"), the film is based on the book titled "Black Moss: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob". Screenwriter Mark Mallouk has penned the script, which focuses on the true story of Whitey Bulger, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his territory. The most interesting part of the story is that Bulger was the brother of a state senator and on the FBI's Most Wanted List for over 10 years, being considered the most infamous violent criminal in South Boston history.
Depp has already played a cop-turned-gangster-informant in the wonderful film "Donnie Brasco", opposite Al Pacino. He also played gangster John Dillinger in the lackluster "Public Enemies", with Christian Bale.
I personally have a deep affinity for gangster films and really hope this film will be good. One thing is for certain though; it will be nice to see Depp flexing his amazing acting chops again.
