It has been reported that a sequel to "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" has been greenlit, which isn't that surprising, since the film racked up $132 million worldwide this weekend. That solid number made it the second largest opening in box office history over Easter weekend, just behind "Clash of the Titans", which made $61 million in 2010.
At this time, it is currently unknown if Director Jon M. Chu will be returning to helm the next installment. There has also been no word if the cast, including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Bruce Willis, Adrianne Palicki, etc, will be reprising their roles. Paramount replaced director Stephen Sommers and 90% of the cast of "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra", so it will be interesting to see if these box office numbers are strong enough to enable the roster to return.
On what the third film could entail, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated, "We haven’t spent any time considering what the next movie is. There are elements we’re really excited about. I’d like to do more ninja story."
Bonaventura also said that he would like to see more "basic character scenes" and "domesticated scenes" to keep it more grounded.
