With the news that hit of Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson getting cut from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2", of course the internet was flooding with reasons for the departure. Could it really be that Marc Webb decided the cast was too stacked and wanted to still focus this story on Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker, before the introduction of Mary Jane? Or could it be that Woodley wasn't the right fit for the role in Webb's eyes and it was part of a larger ploy to replace her?
The plot thickened yesterday when it was announced that actress Sarah Gadon would be joining the cast of "The Amazing Spider-Man 3". Of course speculation led everyone to believe that she would in fact turn out to be the new Mary Jane, and that Woodley would not be returning. Nothing has been confirmed yet and the timing is interesting, but it's very possible it's purely a coincidence. One would think Sony publicity would be more careful and classy than that.
Woodley is a rising star in high demand at the moment, after her impressive performance playing opposite George Clooney in "The Descendants". I personally think she would have made a solid Mary Jane. Fanboys angrily turned to chat boards stating that Woodley was not the right fit for the role, so could that have effected the decision? Gadon is a beautiful actress, and Mary Jane was supposed to be way out of Peter Parker's league after all.
Only time will tell how this situation unfolds. I do believe Webb made the right decision to cut Mary Jane from the second film. Now it's just question on who will portray the famed character in the third and fourth installments.
