The highly anticipated "Man of Steel" opened in AMC Theatres everywhere this past weekend. The Zack Snyder-helmed production grossed an impressive $200 million worldwide. This number apparently pleased Warner Bros. so much, that a "Man of Steel 2" is being fast-tracked to release in 2014.
That seems like quite an ambitious goal, being that pre-production and principal of photography on the first film took a combined total of nearly three years. It definitely makes sense for WB to capitalize on the momentum, but hopefully substance is not lost in result.
This was not the only D.C. news to surface with the impressive box office numbers. The hot and cold concept of "Justice League" has been a hard one to follow, and it was believed that it would only really have a shot of coming to fruition if "Man of Steel" performed well. With the success of its release, it's being reported that we may actually see a "Justice League" film in 2015.
On the landscape for the "JL" film, Warner Bros. President of domestic distribution said the following, "It’s more than just a franchise for us, it really opens up the door to do combinations of the DC Comics characters. We can build them up like Marvel did and benefit from the history of DC."
It would be a dream come true for D.C. fans to see Wonder Woman, The Flash, Batman and so on, sharing the same-screen, just as Marvel has so successfully done. But I think we all rather them take their time to perfect the Universe and get it right, than rush it.
