We've been seeing a steady flow of tweets and set photos from Marc Webb's currently filming production of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2". That's what makes the news of Mary Jane Watson, played by Shailene Woodley, being cut from the film altogether, so surprising. It's not unheard of but certainly uncommon to go back to the drawing board and rearrange the details of the plot, this late in the game.
Speculation around this big news leads many to believe this decision could be caused by a variety of different reasons. Webb stated, "I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress, and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her."
Is this truly the reason, or could it be the backlash of angry fanboys saying Woodley was not right for the role? I admittedly am not a diehard "Spider-Man" fan but Woodley's a rising star with a lot of talent, and she seemed like she was a great choice for the role.
On being dropped from the film, Woodley stated, "Of course I'm bummed. But I'm a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason.…Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."
Will we see Woodley return to play Spider-Man's famed love interest in the third installment or will another actress get the role? Only time will tell but this situation certainly got a lot more interesting.
If Woodley does not return, who would you like to see play Mary Jane? Let us know in the comments section below!
