Johnny Depp has been in the news a lot lately, especially for a man that generally stays out of the spotlight. His "The Lone Ranger" was a flop at the box office, when he once again embarked on a physically transformative character in the form of Tonto. News hit last week that he was in talks to star in "Mortadecai", where he would ditch the makeup and embrace a character more in the "Sherlock Holmes" vein.
Well, it appears that Depp is not quite ready to fully ditch the colorful vestments, and is in final negations to reprise his role as the Mad Hatter in the "Alice and Wonderland" sequel. The Tim Burton film made $1 billion at the worldwide box office in 2010, so news of a sequel is not surprising in the least.
Tentatively titled "Through the Looking Glass", the sequel is being helmed by "Muppets" director James Bobin. It is unknown at this time if Mia Wasikowa, who played the title character, will be returning, as well as any of the other characters from the first. Depp is also set to return as Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean 5". being helmed by "Kon-Tiki" directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg.
It's being reported that Depp has a contract with Disney to develop new projects at the studio. His previous contract was at Warner Bros. Could the reprising of these roles be a tit-for-tat kind of arrangement? Only time will tell but I for one am excited to see him embrace more dramatic roles again in the upcoming "Transcedence" and hopefully "Mortadecai" if it gets locked.
