It looks like Johnny Depp may be ditching his elaborate costumes and pounds of make-up for a new project. Depp is in negotiations to star in David Koepp's "Mortadecai", which is based on Kyril Bonfiglioli's book series titled "The Great Mortdecai Mustache Mystery". Depp would be playing a debonair art dealer and part-time rogue, who travels across the globe to recover a stolen painting. The painting is believed to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold, and British Spies, Angry Russians, an International terrorist and his wife are added to the mix to make the hunt more complicated. Sounds like a mix between "Sherlock Holmes" and "National Treasure".
Depp and Koepp previously worked together on "Secret Window". Koepp has more writing credits under his belt that directorial ones, including such films as "Jurassic Park", "Mission: Impossible" and "Spider-Man". Eric Aronson is penning the screenplay, who is an interesting choice indeed, considering his only other credit includes the 2001 Lance Bass and Joey Fatone movie "On The Line".
Depp most recently appeared as Tonto opposite Armie Hammer in Disney's "The Lone Ranger". The film fell way short of hopes and expectations, having grossed less than $50 million for the entire holiday opening weekend. Perhaps Depp took that as a sign to step away from the physically transformative characters, to dabble with still playful but less eccentric ones. Well that is of course, after reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean 5".
I can respect that the incredibly talented actor wanted to dabble with more colorful characters, but now I'd love to see him get back more dramatic roles, having shined in such films as "Donnie Brasco" and "Blow". I couldn't be more excited to see him in Wally Pfister's directorial debut "Transcendence".
