Yesterday, our beloved fan-favorite Joss Whedon was in the news to discuss one of the Avengers potentially dying in his sequel "The Avengers: Age of Ultron". Now it appears we know who the bad guy known as Ultron, will be portrayed by. Actor James Spader will be playing the mischievous and villainous robot.
In the comics, the original Ultron was created by brilliant scientist Hank Pym, known as Ant-Man. It has already been confirmed that Pym will not be present in this film so speculation leads us to believe that the originator may turn out to be Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). Thankfully we will be seeing Ant-Man in his standalone film in 2015 from director Edgar Wright ("The World's End").
In a recent interview, Whedon spoke about his approach with the robotic villain. He stated, "I knew right away what I wanted to do with him. He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [a new character, Scarlet Witch] who’s a witch."
Spader has definitely shown us his sleazy, bad side early on in his work in John Hughes' "Pretty in Pink" and Oliver Stone's "Wall Street". His most recent work on "The Practice" and "Boston Legal" has earned him the Emmy for best actor three times. Spader has this cocky, confidence, cool-cat air to him, and his voice is great and rich, and I have the confidence he will make a solid villain as Ultron.
