We were all eagerly anticipating the release of Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to his critically acclaimed "District 9". While "Elysium" opened with lukewarm reviews, I don't think any of us are willing to throw in the towel just yet for Blomkamp. Especially considering how incredible his previous film was.
Despite "Elysium" not being another huge hit by critical standards, one thing is for certain; actor Sharlto Copley is a force to be reckoned with. He was one of the best parts of the film and it's clear that he and Blomkamp work very well together. The two are teaming up yet again for Blomkamp's next film, "Chappie".
The project is described as a sci-fi comedy and production will begin this fall. Despite being billed as a comedy, I'm sure many social and political themes will still be present, as seen in all of Blomkamp's work to date. Blomkamp is writing the script along with his wife and "District 9" collaborator, Terri Tatchell. The official plot summary was also revealed, which you can check out below:
Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. The film will star Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie, with Ninja and Yolandi Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, as the two gangsters.
One of the most intriguing parts about this synopsis to me, is that the rap duo Die Antwoord is in the picture. Ninja and Yolandi are incredibly eccentric, unapologetically wild and unique, and I can't wait to see their big-screen debut.
