At approximately 6:13pm last night, the debate on who should play the next Batman in Zack Snyder's upcoming "Man of Steel 2", was put to rest. Warner Bros. put the kibosh on the rumors and announced that their golden boy Ben Affleck, is the next caped crusader. Huge news indeed, but how exactly should we feel about this?
Affleck has certainly established himself as a man with an immense amount of talent. From his writing and directorial efforts as seen in "Gone Baby Gone", "The Town" and "Argo", the man is a great storyteller and is amazing behind the lens. His acting has also improved ever since he stepped up to the director's chair. He already has two Academy Awards under his belt, one for his Best Original Screenplay for "Good Will Hunting" with his buddy Matt Damon and his most recent for Best Picture for "Argo".
But is he tough enough? Intimidating enough? He certainly doesn't have the "edge" that Bale does, but only time will tell. Regardless of how you personally feel about the choice, and by no means was he one of my top choices, the decision was certainly a strategic one. Hollywood and Warner Bros. love him, actors adore working with him, and he certainly is one of the hottest and most visionary directors to emerge in years.
Maybe just another actor wasn't enough to fill the big shoes of such a role. They wanted a multi-talented being like Affleck, to help pave the way for future D.C. films moving forward. I personally would love to see Affleck's "Justice League". Wouldn't you?
