The superhero film trend isn't going anywhere soon and apparently neither are live-action Disney classics based on the original animated films. Last year we got the dark rendition of "Snow White and the Huntsman" starring Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart. Soon we'll get to see the sensational Angelina Jolie star as the villain "Maleficent" and Kenneth Branagh's take on "Cinderella". Now yet another Disney villain is getting her own movie and the character is none other than the Dalmatian-obsessed Cruella De Ville.
Simply titled "Cruella", the script is being penned by "Cinderella" scribe Aline Brosh McKenna. No director or stars are currently attached. Glenn Close starred as the eccentric villainess in "101 Dalmatians" and the sequel and is attached to the project as executive producer. That film also starred Jeff Daniels and Joely Richardson.
We see this situation happen a ton in Hollywood. They tap into a formula that works and want to keep on milking the cow. These classic Disney animated films have decades of momentum and nostalgia under their belt and an insanely large archive to dip into.
It's cool to see a story focus on a particular villain and explore more of their backstory and how they became the menacing creature we know them as. The renowned play "Wicked" so brilliantly did this, and "Maleficent" also sets out to show us there is more than we realize to the layered character.
Now the question is, who will play the colorful Cruella? Let us know who you think should play her in the comments section below!
