It appears I wasn't the only one very excited for the return of Katniss and the tributes this past weekend. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" opened at an impressive $161.1 million domestically, setting the new box office record for the largest November opening. It also racked up $146.6 million overseas.
The film beat the previous November record "The Twilight Saga: New Moon", which made $142.9 million. It did not surpass "Iron Man 3" however, which opened at $174 million its opening weekend, and remains the largest opening of the year thus far.
The sequel has been met with glowing reviews by both audiences and critics alike. The film helmed by Francis Lawrence felt like a much more epic production, matched by the interesting developing character arcs and stunning visuals.
