Roland Emmerich's INDEPENDENCE DAY Sequel Delayed A Year

By Amirose Eisenbach November 14, 2013

While we still don't know for sure if Will Smith will be back for Roland Emmerich's "Independence Day" sequel, the production now has a bit more time to figure that out. The release date has been shifted from July 3rd, 2015 to July 1st, 2016.

Could this shift be to accommodate Smith or another actor's schedule or did they simply need more time to get their ducks in a row? By pushing it a year it does coincide with the 20th anniversary of the original film however, so could it just be a clever marketing tactic?

Emmerich has reportedly written two scripts; one with Smith's character included and one without. It will be interesting to see how this one shakes out.

What do you make of this release date shift? Let us know in the comments section below!
