We certainly were wishing upon a lucky star that the photo released last week of J.J. Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy, R2-D2 and two unspecified gentlemen, confirmed that our favorite droid was indeed returning for "Star Wars: Episode VII". We've been reminded many times in this industry however, that until it's been announced by someone directly on the production team, it's not worth get our hopes up too high without that official confirmation.
While now it appears you can keep that hope soaring folks, because that lovable droid has been confirmed by Lucasfilm to be returning for the next episode. Apparently the two unknown gentlemen in the picture were Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, who are members of the worldwide R2-D2 Builders Club.
The duo brought R2-D2 to the European Star Wars celebration this past Summer, so it makes sense that the same men are helping to craft him as well as other creature effects for the upcoming film.
R2-D2 is one of the only characters that was present in all previous six "Star Wars" episodes, so while we aren't exactly surprised he will be returning, we are certainly thrilled about it. No galaxy far, far away is complete without the nostalgic character.
