Following the big announcement of Paul Rudd being cast as Ant-Man in Edgar Wright's superhero film of the same name, some seriously huge news has just hit. Michael Douglas has been cast as Hank Pym in the film and Rudd will be playing Scott Lang. Unlike the mass amounts of rumors that flow like a river surrounding superhero films these days, this news has been substantiated by Marvel.com.
Both confirmations are huge because that means the story will focus on Lang and not Pym. Following a variety of different story lines in the comics, this could mean that Lang will steal the Ant-Man suit from Pym and that Pym could serve as an eventual mentor to Lang. Hopefully we see some flashbacks of a younger Pym in the 60s of him discovering the particles that enable him to become the first Ant-Man.
Marvel president and resident genius Kevin Feige had this to say on the subject, "With Hank Pym's rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves. We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn't be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life."
This news also brings up the question as to Pym's partner Janet van Dyne a.k.a The Wasp. She is one of the best female superheros in my opinion and the Pym and Wasp relationship is such a layered and complicated one. Will they deviate from the comics and still include her in some capacity or also bring in an older actress to serve as Douglas' counterpart?
Wright eluded to a "heist" direction for the film a ways back so this would definitely fall in line with that. There are still so many questions yet to be answered but now that we have the official confirmation of the two main characters of the film, we do have a better idea as to what emphasis the story will revolve around.
