You may not like him or his theatrics but you certainly know who Kanye West his. The performer has cemented himself as one of the biggest names of the music and fashion industry, coining himself as an "artistic genius". Now the artistic genius plans to invade yet another industry; the film world.
West doesn't do anything on a small scale and has now enlisted screenwriter and "American Psycho" novelist Bret Easton Ellis to write his screenplay. Ellis first scoffed at the idea but then apparently came around after he listened to West's latest album "Yeezus".
Ellis stated, "He came and asked me to write the film. I didn’t want to at first. Then I listened to ‘Yeezus.’ It was early summer last year and I was driving in my car. He’d given me an advance copy, and I thought, regardless of whether I’m right for this project, I want to work with whoever made this. So f*ck it, I said yes. And that’s how it happened. That was seven or eight months ago. We’ll see what happens."
On his collaborator, "I really like him as a person. I know he comes off in this performance-art way in the press, but if you’re just alone with him in a room talking for three hours, it’s kind of mind-blowing."
So the next obvious question is, what does West want his film to focus on? His music, his fashion, his rise to fame, a particular moment that helped shape him? Inquiry minds may or may not want to know.
True to form, West doesn't plan on letting the details out to the pubic just yet. "It’s in Kanye Land," Ellis said. "And that’s subject to a whole other time frame."
I'm not a fan of the whole "I am God" theatrics that West has been dabbling in, but I certainly think the man has talent. Ellis is a fantastic writer so the duo should create something interesting, to say the very least.
