We learned last March that actor B.J. Novak had joined Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2". Until now, we didn't know what role he would be playing but that of course never stops speculation from running wild. It's been revealed that Novak will play Alistair Smythe.
If you aren't a diehard Spider-Man fan, you may be asking, who is Alistair Smythe? In the comics, he was the son of Spencer Smythe, a foe of Peter Parkers. He created robots called Spider Slayers with the intention on capturing or killing the web-slinger. He was said to be working with both J. Jonah Jameson and Norman Osborn. Since most of the upcoming villains appear to be stemming from Oscorp in one way or another, I would imagine they would play up that part of the storyline.
Similar to how Dane DeHaan's Harry will be the successor and eventual Green Goblin after his father Norman (Chris Cooper) dies, Alistair also takes over his father's legacy after he dies. The film is also very villain heavy with the Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx's Electro and Paul Giamatti's Rhino, so I wonder if they will just be setting up Novak's character to be more dominate in a future film.
