Gary Oldman has been in the news a lot lately, and rightfully so, because he is one of the best actors working today. He can currently be seen in the "RoboCop" remake and is busy again discussing one of the next projects we'll see him in. Oldman will play a man named Dreyfus in the sequel "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". Other than the very intense and incredible teaser trailer that was released for it, we haven't known too many details up to this point. Now Oldman helps fill in a few pieces of that puzzle for us.
*Be warned, the quote that Oldman provided may be considered as containing MILD SPOILERS. You have been alerted, so please continue reading at your own risk.*
In a recent interview, Oldman stated, "He’s the sort of designated leader if you will of this community of those that were lucky enough to survive the simian flu, the disease, and then the ensuing social uprising from it…. And they need power and there’s a power station and some of my people go out to see if it’s operational, if it’s still out there, and then they discover that there’s a whole community of apes living there. We believed they were all completely fire-bombed and wiped out."
We saw the beginning of the Simian Flu start to take its effect in the first film, so that description reinforces the apocalyptic vibe of the city that we witnessed in the trailer. There were so many interesting themes explored in the first film, really questioning who was the real villain; the apes or mankind for putting them in captivity? I could not be more thrilled to learn that Oldman will be the hero-of-sorts for the human side, going up against Caesar the ape and his disciples.
The Matt Reeves-helmed production also stars Jason Clarke, Keri Russell and Kodi-Smit McPhee. Fox must feel Reeves did a very good job on this film, as he's already locked to return for the third installment. That of course in result continues to build on the excitement we already very much have intact.
