The back and forth is over and Johnny Depp has officially signed on to play gangster James "Whitey" Bulger in "Black Mass". Scott Cooper is helming the production, who recently directed the intense drama "Out of the Furnace", starring Christian Bale and Woody Harrelson.
Depp originally dropped out of the production over salary disputes and at that time, Barry Levinson was attached to direct before Cooper was locked. Joel Edgerton ("Warrior") was also attached to co-star as FBI agent and childhood friend of Bulger. Since then, Edgerton has left the production and it's being reported that Tom Hardy is in talks to now play the agent.
Production is said to kickoff in May, working from a script that was written by Mark Mallouk. Mallouk adapted the 2001 Dick Lehr/Gerald O’Neill New York Times bestseller book "Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between The FBI and The Irish Mob." It has since then received a rewrite from Jez Butterworth.
The story focuses on the notorious Boston kingpin and the empire he built, as well as becoming an FBI informant. With then help of his brother, the former president of Massachusetts Senate, and Connolly, they were able to clear up their neighborhood of the Mafia. This in result further strengthened the power of Bulger's Winter Hill Gang, until the FBI turned on him, forcing him to go into hiding until his eventual arrest.
Depp has been dabbling with physically transformative characters for a while now, as seen in such films as "The Pirates of the Caribbean", "Alice in Wonderland", and most recently, "The Lone Ranger". He will next be seen in Wally Pfister's sci-fi flick "Transcendence" and the crime-thriller "Mortadecai". I am ecstatic that he is ditching the make-up for some dramatic roles again. He was absolutely incredibly in the other gangster-turned-informant movie "Donnie Brasco", and I am incredibly excited to see him become Bulger.
