The production of "Ghostbusters 3" has had a ton of problems getting off the ground. The last issue left the film without a director, as Ivan Reitman, who helmed the previous two films, departed the project. Now it appears no time has been wasted and there is another name already being courted to direct, or rather, two names.
Coming off the huge success of "The Lego Movie", it's being reported that Phil Lord and Chris Miller are in talks to direct the picture. They are certainly one of the hottest directing duos right now, also coming off the success of "21 Jump Street" and "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs". Surely they have proven they know how to make a good comedy, how to illuminate great characters and how to tell a wonderful story.
But if the duo is locked, that only takes care of one of the big looming problems. The other pressing one is that out of the main three guys of the film, only Dan Akyroyd has committed to returning. Harold Ramis tragically passed recently and Bill Murray has never been signed on, so with Reitman leaving, the production still certainly has their work cut out for them.
Would it just be better to reboot the franchise and start over at this point, since so many of the pivotal elements are missing? Maybe just have Akyroyd do a fun cameo for the fans?
There are a lot of different ways they could play this one but Lord and Miller have instilled much confidence that they would do a stellar job with almost any project.
