We have all been waiting for a new "Terminator" film to get the bad memory of McG's "Terminator: Salvation" stripped from our minds. The film just didn't work in holding up against its amazing predecessors. A fifth film has been in development for some time now and up to this point, we've known pretty little about the production.
Director Alan Taylor from "Thor: The Dark World" is at the helm and Emilia Clarke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jai Courtney and Jason Clarke are set to star. Now the former Governator himself has given us some new juicy details and says it will explore the same tone as "Terminator 2: Judgement Day".
According to Schwarzenegger, "Terminator is going to have the exact same feel. The way it reads, it has the same feel of Terminator 2. It’s big. There’s hardcore action and it has some really great visual effects in there, but not over the top. It’s not a Thor type of movie, even though it’s the same director. It has good special effects, but just enough to say, "Wow, where did that come from? How did they do that?"
The rating for the film hasn't been decided yet, which should come after filming. Obviously keeping a film PG-13 brings in more ticket sales but an R-rating can make it much more epic. The new "RoboCop" reboot kept it it at a PG-13 rating and focused more on the science and tech instead of the brutality, so perhaps "Terminator 5" will do the same. Also keep in mind that "Terminator: Genesis" is just a working title at this point.
Schwarzenegger is no stranger to big action-packed blockbusters. He also identifies why this franchise is such a unique and special one, as he elaborated on below:
"I think that it’s just so wild to have a franchise that has been around for that long, and then after 30 years, to get asked again to be the only character in a movie that is the same character is unheard of, in movie history. You always switch out, like with James Bond and Batman. They have new characters there. But, not here. That, to me, is an extraordinary situation and a great opportunity. Of course, I was honored when I was asked to come back and play the character with Sarah Connor. It was the same when Universal called and said, "We want to do the sequel to Twins." That’s 25 years later, after it came out. And 34 or 35 years later, after doing Conan, they’ve come back and said that they want me to play Conan."
All the elements seem to be in place for the fifth installment of the franchise. Just don't screw it up, Taylor and team. We are hungry for a new, incredible "Terminator" film and by dropping hints that it may resemble the best film in the franchise, that is certainly raising expectations sky high.
