Zack Snyder Chats Casting Decisions for MAN OF STEEL Sequel

By Amirose Eisenbach March 5, 2014

There is always an explosion of controversy surrounding the casting of superheroes. These films are being green lit like never before, thus leading to many more eruptions than usual on the web. Fanboys and fangirls especially, typically have someone in mind that they feel would be the perfect fit, according to the comic-book material they grew up with.

We watched this happen with nearly every announcement surrounding Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" sequel. First there was outrage after Ben Affleck was cast as Batman. This was followed by extreme displeasure for Gal Gadot being cast as Wonder Woman and most recently Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. But Snyder is no pushover and has certainly proven he knows how to make a solid comic-book movie, so he had something to say about this matter to hopefully silence fans.

Snyder stated, "We’re casting according to what’s happening in the script. And we’re hoping that leads to enough originality, enough perspective on what we’re doing that you get something fresh and exciting. I understand the canon. I’m not crazy. I know what these characters need from a mythological standpoint."

On the most recent uproar surrounding Eisenberg's casting, he stated, "I think Jesse is going to be an amazing Lex. Let’s not forget he was nominated for an Academy Award. It’s not like I just grabbed my friend to play the guy! This guy’s the real deal."

Regardless of your stance on the issue, the director certainly makes a fair point. We may all have a dream actor to play a specific role, but it may not fit in-line with their vision and with the script. Certain liberties are always taken with book and comic-to-film adaptations, so as long as an amazing movie is being made that honors the material for the most part, we should be happy it made it to the big-screen in the first place.
