We heard about a "Goonies" sequel many moons ago but until now, nothing really tangible had materialized. Now the director of the cult-classic original, Richard Donner, has confirmed the sequel is happening and that he is hopeful the entire cast will return.
In a recent interview, when asked if he would ever venture back into the superhero genre he helped create, he stated, "If you call The Goonies" a comic book".
Of course this could all just be Donner's optimism that it will happen and it may never actually go into production. He did blatantly state when asked however, "We're doing a sequel". Maybe he has personally been getting the pieces in motion but is not revealing too much information just yet.
Cast member originals like Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green and Martha Plimpton have expressed interest in getting back together for another chapter. The sequel script was penned years ago and is rumored to focus on the kids of the original Goonies, who embark on their own adventure, just like their fathers and mothers before them.
"The Goonies" is no doubt a gem and a title that has solidified itself as one of the greatest of its kind. Is it too late to revisit the same world and characters, or could they do actually do it some justice? Only time will tell but if they get all the originals back, it is certainly a good start.
