Hugh Jackman Discusses Retiring His Wolverine

By Amirose Eisenbach April 30, 2014

Hugh Jackman has become iconic in the role of the gruff, badass Wolverine. He has portrayed the character an impressive seven times to date, starting with "X-Men" in 2000. His next appearance will be in Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Days of Future Past". He has said many times before that he is close to retiring the character, but has that time finally arrived?

His last appearance as the character was in James Mangold's "The Wolverine". He was perhaps the most fierce and strong representation of him to date, which is impressive given his age. The confirmation of "The Wolverine 3" with Mangold returning hit a few months ago. That doesn't necessarily mean Jackman is a lock, however. Check out his thoughts on the subject below:

"I don’t know [what's happening with Wolverine 3 yet]. We’re talking it through. I still am very ambitious for the character. And tonally I feel like we corrected the ship with the last one. But I feel we can still go further, in a way. If I did another one I’m 99.9% sure it would be the last, so that will inform what it is for me.

Well, of course we’re looking at Old Man Logan, because that may be the only option left at this point! [laughs] We are looking at a lot of different storylines. No one has jumped out. You can tell from my answer that we’re still working it out. I’m working with Jim Mangold, which is exciting. Jim came on board The Wolverine after Darren [Aronofsky] left, so he inherited it. And of all the things that Jim can do, one of the great things he does is develop scripts. I’m excited to see what we can come up with, but I haven’t signed on signed on. I’m genuinely at that point where unless it’s better than the last one I’m not going to do it."

Jackman has certainly given the character his all and no one can blame him if he wants to throw in the claws and try something else. I wouldn't mind seeing him go out in style with a solo third installment but we'll just have to wait and see what kind of script Mangold turns around.
